If you like all things rock and roll, all through the day and all through the night you got to and we mean it, you have got to roll with this two disk compilation of some of the best rock and roll music from the 60’s. And it’d not just that, the groovy quality takes a backseat but haunting and painful vocals are heartfelt and damn right piercing.

The tracks make you go mad, perfect for foot tapping and go yay! yay! on the dance floor. Elenore by The turtles as a melodic, whispery scheme that soon picks up the tempo, and turns into a cheery shout. The that tops the chart is Hi HO Silver Lining by Jeff Beck as it makes you believe that the world is waving at you and anything you want is yours.

So if you wish to ride a roller coaster this is ‘The Option’.

Lady Gaga hit the spotlight in mid 2008 with The fame, and then promptly became famous for almost everything but the album. Weird clothes, strange hairdo’s and raunchy moves made the album a fully loaded video of sensory stimulus. That was 2008. then entered The Fame Monster which was initially tagged as a re-release of that album, featuring eight new tracks upturned the post hysteria. In one word it is simply ‘Fantastic’.

To begin with, the basics; she’s got the kind of voice that makes you think of a kylie or a Gwen; but then there’s that strangely mature, unshakable confident and Madonna like quality to her music too. The album is old school and unconventional in the style of a Beyoncé or an Aguilera, its novelty lies in the direction the drama is coming from. She is a full blown diva from the 70’s, completely unafraid of where or who she is, transplanted into morass of twenty-first century Hollywood.

For those who enjoy the sound of a singer, Speechless does a good job of setting the scene. Gaga’s voice is brilliant; it soars and dips, dancing into the spaces between the operatic and gloriously overdone guitar riffs and piano melodies. There’s plenty of the old gaga in this album too; since it evolved over the course of music tour in 2008-09.

Who the hell puts out an album with eight new tacks and remixes? Lady Gaga- leather clad, lyrically astounding, musically outstanding- but so damn weird, it’s awesome.

Pop’s got hiss…and stings! Opens with a warning, so don’t say the lady didn’t warn you. Mad House deep dives head-first, into the mayhem and mess of love turned violent turned umm, love-ly again. The twisted celebration of an affair that left us with disturbing visuals of an abused Rihanna in real life, finds its artistic expression with a hard hitting sound here, showcasing this Jay-Z’s protégé’s vocals that are nothing short of shimmering, shiny, pulsating with pain.

Photographs (track) featuring Will.I.Am is when you think its getting mellow, the lyrics browsing through the snapshots of a relationship that didn’t quite work out, the image of gun-licking Rihanna burns it up again. The album breaks through the roof, Wait Your Turn (track) is an electronic grind, the grungy Rockstar 101(track) is flawless. Even Stupid in love(track), slightly sloppy, finds redemption with the album’s great production values. Russian Roulette(track) is the counter piece, the one with the crazily unsettling video; ends with a quivering intake of breath and the gunshot.

Deliberate pose on the cover gives the insight of demented boyfriend déjà Vu, the snap and the crackle of the word speaks of lives flashing before eyes, and music blows the mind. All carefully constructed, Rihanna has the attitude of a hustler, and a winner.

One we loved teens as they got our angst out and made us feel the spirit of life. The other we loved as we grew older recognizing in it a maturity that left us confused and dazed. The third we spent most of our lives not knowing the way it existed. And when three such lives collide in the form of band, it makes one to watch out for Them Crooked Vultures, Nirvana’s Dave Grohl (and he’s back on drums), Led Zepperlin’s John Paul Jones and Queen’s of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme , come together in this supergroup, and is self -titled debut album.

The combination of strong guitars and thumping drums is a common thread throughout the album , but the vocals at times, make you wonder that there is something missing, still some songs are so good they deserve a mention. Mind Eraser No Chaser, a powerful song that ends, oddly enough, with a mellow sound of a French horn. ‘What does it mean when the knife and the hands are your own?’ They are clearly trying to create new sounds, and that’s the USP of the album. Whether it’s putting in a French horn at the end of the song. or adding a sense of it in the middle, as in Dead End Friends, where a snaky riff plays in a hypnotic loop and recalls sheeshas. Drums kick of the the beat-y New Fang, and the guitars are so melodic that you don’t want Homme to start singing; but when he does sing, to your relief, he sings in the same melody , keeping it going. Its kind of music you dance to in a bar, with a mug of your favourite brew. The guitars are insane and the drums deserve a drum roll.

These guys are good and together they make for a trio that really knows its music and, most importantly, loves it.

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone (though only a miniscule part has been adapted from the book; the rest is all original), 3 Idiots is a story of three friends studying in an engineering college Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi). The film takes the plot much beyond the campus confines and the target audience much above the youth, for universal appeal. It leaves the audience with a message that- Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams.

After successfully dispensing philosophies of ‘Jaadu ki jhappi’ in Munnabhai MBBS and ‘Gandhigiri’ in Lage Raho Munnabhai, Hirani incites a new philosophy of ‘Aal izz well’ in 3 Idiots. And like his doctrine, all is well in his helluva film.

The direction of the film represented a lot of ideologies through the thoughtful dialogues touching several academic issues from grading systems, parental pressure, student suicides, conformist coaching to theoretical knowledge, without getting preachy at any instance. Even the music and informal style of dressing of characters gave the film a trendy campus feel. Performance wise Aamir Khan steals the show with his sharp, optimistic and livewire attitude and not forgettable Boman Irani was exceptionally good as the principal despite adding a lisp to his character.

According to reviewers movie is a clear portrayal of how ruined is our education system, a crazy race to become engineer or doctor. Knowing the fact that our education system is the vertebrae of our country, we still follow the old, inundated system which was formed by the British Rule. But there is another school of thought which believes that 3 Idiots imitates our educational system and sends out a wrong message the youth.

With all the comments and compliments ‘3 Idiots’ was one of the most entertaining films of the decade by establishing a compelling connect with its audience

Firaaq is an ensemble film that takes place over a 24-hour period and a month after a horrific communal carnage. It is a fictional account on the repercussions of the dreadful communal riots of Gujarat in 2002. The story unveils through multiple parallel narratives where Muneera (Shahana Goswami) is attempting to restore her life while trying to uncover faces who had set her house ablaze, A Gujarati housewife (Deepti Naval) is unable to overcome her guilt of closing the door on to a Muslim woman frantically seeking safety from a frenzied Hindu mob.

Research, writing and the making of the film has been a thought- provoking experience for Nandita Dass as it gave her an opportunity to express her concerns, dilemmas and beliefs. According to her most films about riots are full of violence and about individual character or villains but she has chosen to explore the fear, anxiety, prejudice and ambivalence of human relationships in such times.

According to critics the establishment of most of the characters were effective but somewhere marred by weak transformation or unsettled resolution of their conflicts. The sudden despair in Naseeruddin Shah’s pious character post his perpetually positive outlook isn’t convincing. Sanjay Suri’s overnight acceptance of his true identity appears both hurried and unpersuasive even Paresh Rawal’s character was not fleshed out and short-lived.

Overall Firaaq (implying quest) isn’t flawless but is sensitive enough to end your search for a poignant human drama. The film does not have a commercial pull, but it was noticed for being hard hitting.

2 States: The Story of My Marriage’ picks up where ‘Five Point Someone’ left of. It is the author’s account of how he met his wife. Its story is inspired from a real story of Chetan Bhagat and his wife Anusha who are from Delhi and Tamil nadu respectively. It is a love story about a Punjabi boy and a Tamilian girl. Krish and Ananya are from two different states of India, deeply in love and want to get married. Their parents don’t agree and the couple have a tough battle to get married with the consent of their parents.

The Prologue is sure to make its desperate attempt to make the first impression. But nothing apart from this in the book is interesting. There are too many cliches, too many repetitions like Ananya wearing the same color [peacock blue] Saree to every occasion and author mentioning it all over the book. There are many things that seem to be quite filmy like Jab We Met types…

On the brighter side the book successfully brings out the notions associated with marriage in our country. The boy is thought of as a cash certificate who has to be encashed at the time of wedding. The culture difference in north and south India has been scribbled with great effectiveness. The “larger than life” living style of punjabi’s and the melowed down south Indian lifestyle has been put with lot of sincerity.

But on the bottom line it is a nice and entertaining book. Perfect when you want to read something light and get amused. Chetan has never claimed to be a grammatically correct writer but for youth he speaks and that’s what makes him a writer with a fresh approach.

Jaswant Singh’s latest book ‘Jinnah, India, Partition’ is a scholarly work. Jaswant is an ex- Indian Army officer who as a Major resigned his commission to pursue a political career. He was a founder member of the BJP the Hindu revivalist party. The book is lucid and well written. It is an interpretation of the sordid and tortuous period of partition in 1947. Jaswant lucidly brings about the transformation of Jinnah from a nationalist and secularist to the sole spokes person of Indian Muslims. Singh brings out the fact that Jinnah was not a hater of Hindus, but was only allergic to the Congress party and its Hindu leaders Gandhi and Nehru.

The book gives the reader an opportunity go back , study & find out who has done what during the time when power sharing games were played. This has actually changed the lines of history since many believe it was Jinnah who was responsible for the partition of India and the later consequences. Rather the book opened up serious and interesting questions leading to controversy thereby making it read more faster than its normal speed & may be writer also wants the same. After this heroic step government of India is trying hard to uncover all myth & come up with solid plans. The book which seems to have become responsible for a probable collapse of the historic and formidable Bharatiya Janata Party is selling like hot cakes.

One can disagree with Jaswant’s assessments but can’t afford to ignore it. He stoked the embers but was unaware of the fact that these flames will engulf him. The BJP has expelled him and he is in no man’s land for writing something that is anathema to most Hindus. On the whole the book is well written and It’s worth a read by any person who is interested in the sub-continent.

What happens when Shiv Khera writes a book like YOU CAN WIN, the world goes gaga gaga and laps it up by tens of thousands. A management Guru like him has many a story to tell and with his style of writing, it is no wonder.
